One more thing that happened, and I'm not sure if Refineus was able to scout it... on the southeast corner of the underground map, there was a "tunnel" with only 2 possible entrances and full of resources and structures, I had all of them full with forts and cities that couldn't get reached without me knowing it... That gave me a very good view of the benefits of playing underground... although, not always you get this kind of map, I think I was just lucky...
I agree the game was too long, I believe it had to do with the fact that the map was too big for the 2, then I played underground and Refineus played surface, that put us even further away.
I tried to get a quick win with some assassins sneaking into his main, but it was a failure, it also took me a long time to get there, next time I need to pick the explorer spec.
The indie sites were also problematic for me, but probably not as much as they were for Refineus, I tried to clear the ones that were closer to my cities, it actually helped me to keep some on the surface since I believe one of them attacked Refineus.
Since the map was too big, I focused on economy and expanding instead of trying to finish the game quick, specially after having my assassins falling like flies, I knew sneaking was not the way.
After that, I tried to sneak again anyway.... but this time with my leader and some stalkers, but I didn't do too much damage, only was able to kill a couple juggernauts, and that was it... He tried to attack me back with some dragons while my leader was in the void, but I was ready for him, I defended my main well.
After that, I attacked him again and took one of his cities with a party of 6 stalkers, and they were destroyed by his army again... at this point I was feeling that I couldn't stop his tanks and juggernauts with my stalkers... So by that time I researched dark pact and mass produced them... in parallel I had another party with 2 maxed out heroes approaching his territory from a different flank.
He saw them and was waiting for me, but a bad position of his units made him lost all of them without causing me any losses, I think that was the beginning of the end. By that time, my leader was back with 2 stacks of stalkers and I had 1 more stack guarding my cities....
Looking at the points we were almost the same until turn 80, that I believe was when my 2 heroes army started to cause him trouble.
GG, Well played... Looking forward for the next one...
I think I let the game draw to long. In the late game, I made some key mistakes that were not so pleasant. I believe if I did not consider some plans like a.i surround working against a.i only would work on a human player. However, I think I had the upper hand on game development, but I did not clear hard sites in some domains so I believe Dr light hade better economics in general.
I did not die with my leader at any point before the first general battle with some assassins sneaking into my base around turn 30. I think the game for me fell apart when independent boneyards stole two cities for me and at the same time me losing a hero for a pandora's box. I believe if I had avoided that particular box and run for Dr lights cities instead I could have won the game most likely as I were ahead military wise. But I got beaten by very strong particular elemental and for what: "A powerful theocrat leader soon arrives..." which eventually was beaten by Dr lights giving good stuff to him I guess.
In general, this game I improved defence at some point but lost my patience in expanding in favour to research and feed Dr light with some easy wyvern kills. But Dr light had far too many vessels, I failed to capture the fairy dwelling on point accidentally misclicked "prepare to be destroyed" and lost later a naga dwelling due to being close to his premises.
Around turn 50 when the map was flooded with tier IV stacks I was surprised about 4 stacks of Archons essentially killing three stacks of units that were sort of commando squad going to harass south of his cavern base.
End game I was considering an all in, to weaken economics, but it was pointless with two good stacks in my base from Dr light, maybe if I hade run for the one stack earlier that was split. Leaving a Goblin Rogue to long may not be the wisest. Dreadnought is stronger, but vulnerable if not healed or supported by storm sister to counter shadow stalkers.
