We both consolidated our surroundings.  I then caught sswdidi's leader stack in the middle with two of my stacks.  Won the battle and sswdidi subsequently surrendered.

In order to avoid advantaging one team or the other, for each match, the team who will host the match was randomly selected.
The first team in the "turn order" above (who is also the team on top in the tree here) must host the game.

Any of the players in the team can host.

When players do not show up for their match, the Tournament Judges have the right to change the match!

If both players agreed to play a game with the Empire Building Mod, they could also tell judges: "we both agree, so what's the big deal?". But that would not be fair to other players because they would not have played a game where the class/race have different strength/weakness and might have for instance played a weak class in the normal settings who is strong with EBM. So we cannot accept that as it's not fair to other players.
That's the same here, starting 1st gives advantages and disadvantages and the rules mean you cannot choose whether you start first or second, it's random.

Hosting properly is what saves time. Rehosting takes 5min. So it has no impact on when the game ends.

Yes, but this is not a question of the preference of players in a particular match, it's the rules of the tournament to ensure fairness between matches.

I do not mind if Gilafron plays on slot 1.

Hi! Yes indeed Gilafron, you need to start on slot #2. You can try to switch before sswidi joins but it's likely to prevent the game from starting so you may have to rehost.

Otherwise the settings seem good and we have everyone's class/race.

Gilafron, if you Switch to position 2 before opponent join you can perhaps prevent a re-host.
